How do full dentures work?

Full dentures replace the teeth on either your upper or lower jaw and are supported by the surrounding gums and tissue of the mouth.

Full upper dentures cover the entire roof of your mouth and attach by suction. Full lower dentures are kept in place by the gums and muscles of your mouth. All of our dentures are carefully fitted to the shape of your mouth to ensure they are comfortable and practical to wear.

How long do full dentures last?

Full dentures are long-lasting. Their lifespan depends on their function and your mouth; however, full dentures can last for approximately 6-8 years with proper care.

Just like a reliable car, your dentures need regular check-ups and maintenance to keep them in the best shape possible. The dentures themselves must be removed and thoroughly cleaned daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, and your mouth needs to be brushed morning and night.

Once every three to four years, your full dentures will need ‘relining’. This is a process which involves the area of the denture which meets your gums (the base of the denture) being resurfaced with new material so that it fits comfortably along your soft tissue and gums. Relining extends the lifespan of the denture, makes it more comfortable and prevents damage to your gums. It can also help to reduce the likelihood of any complications that may arise from infection or other issues.

Are full dentures the right choice for me?

If you have lost your permanent teeth for any reason – an accident, operation or tooth decay – full dentures may be an option for you.

At The Denture Clinic, we custom-make full dentures to help a myriad of issues in the mouth. Full dentures are man-made prosthetic appliances designed to replace teeth, bone or tissue and allow you to retain the function of your mouth. If missing teeth are not replaced, this can cause the muscles in your face to sag over time. Dentures can restore the natural contour of your face, protect your gums and can allow you to speak more easily after losing teeth, bone or tissue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Complete dentures are removable appliances that substitute all missing teeth in either jaw. Made from impressions of the mouth, they aim for a snug fit and rest on the gums and jawbone. These dentures are designed to help in eating and speaking, aligning with the natural functionality of teeth.

Complete dentures are typically recommended for those who have lost all or most of their teeth, often due to decay, gum disease, or trauma. If you’re experiencing difficulties in chewing, frequent oral infections, or noticeable changes in the structure of your face, these could be indicators that dentures might be necessary to restore normal function and appearance to your mouth.

The process involves several appointments to measure your mouth and create dentures that fit. After initial measurements, follow-up appointments help ensure proper fit and function. Depending on your specific needs, the entire process may take a few weeks to a few months.

Once you have dentures, regular visits to the dentist are crucial. These check-ups, typically recommended every six months, help ensure that dentures remain comfortable and fit well. They allow for timely adjustments in response to changes in your oral health.

The first appointment typically includes thoroughly examining your gums, jaw, and remaining teeth to assess your suitability for dentures. Impressions of your mouth may be taken to create a precise model for your dentures. This appointment is also an opportunity to discuss your expectations and any concerns about wearing dentures.
