Happy Seniors Couple With Healthy Teeth

Frequently Asked Questions

There are three main types of dentures: full, partial and overdentures.

  • Full dentures are used when all of your teeth have been lost. They fit over the gums, helping to keep them healthy and restoring the loss of function that occurs with missing teeth.
  • Partial dentures fill in gaps where some of your natural teeth have been removed or fallen out. They’re held in place by clasps that attach to the remaining natural teeth and can be taken out easily for cleaning purposes without any help from a professional.
  • Implant Overdentures are also known as removable or full arch dentures that go over implants previously placed in the jaw

Just as you would look after your natural teeth, it is essential that you take care of your dentures by keeping them clean. To help avoid any hygiene problems, clean your dentures at least twice a day by brushing them with a brush that has soft bristles to avoid damage.

Using mouthwash can also help to kill any bacteria that has collected on the surface of the dentures and keep them looking their best. If you are removing your dentures to clean them, ensure that you handle them with care and always provide a soft landing such as a towel beneath you should they fall onto the floor.

Whilst it is important to wear your dentures as much as you can, you still need to give your gums a break every so often to help relieve pressure on your teeth. For this reason, it is advised that you do not wear your partial dentures overnight and instead take them out and soak them in water before you go to sleep.

Dentures are initially moulded to your teeth to make them a comfortable fit, however, over time, the shape of your gums and the bones supporting the dentures can change. When your dentures are relined, acrylic resin is used to correct the fit and mould the dentures to your mouth so that they are once again comfortable. It’s recommended you get your dentures relined every 2 years to ensure the best results for your teeth.

Dentures are worn on a day-to-day basis, so it’s important that they feel comfortable. If you begin to feel discomfort or pain from your dentures, make sure to get in touch with your denture professional who will be to take a look at them and adjust them if needed.

Although it may initially feel uncomfortable, over time, eating with your dentures in will become second nature. Start with softer foods until you get used to the feeling, at which point you should be able to eat fairly normally. You can also use a bit of denture adhesive to help stabilise and hold your dentures in place whilst you adjust to them.

When your dentures are initially fitted, it is normal to experience tightness or irritation as your mouth gets used to them. If you had teeth removed before your dentures were fitted, you may also experience a small amount of pain in these areas. Overall, dentures are painless once your teeth have become accustomed to them.

Feel confident and enjoy life with the highest quality dentures from The Denture Clinic.
